Sparklers, Circuits, and Chaos: New Year Safety Tips You Didn’t Know You Needed

As the New Year approaches, celebrations often include fireworks, festive lighting, and outdoor electrical decorations. While fireworks bring excitement to the night sky, mixing them with electrical equipment can lead to serious safety risks. Taking a few precautions can keep your celebration bright, safe, and worry free.

Keep Fireworks Away from Power Lines:

Fireworks can travel unpredictably, especially in windy conditions. Even small fireworks launched too close to overhead power lines can cause sparks, outages, or damage.

Avoid Lighting Fireworks Near Outlets or Extension Cords:

Outdoor outlets, extension cords, and temporary power sources are particularly vulnerable to heat and falling debris. Damaged cords can result in shorts, shocks, or electrical fires.

Protect Holiday Lighting from Falling Embers:

Decorative lights can melt or break if hit by sparks. A single ember can cause bulbs to pop or insulation to weaken, increasing the risk of electrical issues.

Use Only Outdoor Rated Extension Cords:

If you are powering speakers, lights, or additional décor outdoors, make sure all cords are weather rated. Keep them well away from launch areas to avoid burns or impact damage.

Avoid Overloading Circuits:

With extra lighting, heated outdoor equipment, and entertainment setups, circuits can reach their limits quickly. Overloaded breakers and overheated outlets can pose a fire hazard.

Never Store Fireworks Near Electrical Panels:

Fireworks, lighter fluid, and other flammables should be kept far from your electrical panel, generator, or any energized equipment. A single spark is all it takes to ignite stored materials.

Establish a Safe Launch Zone:

Set up a clear area far from buildings, vehicles, and any electrical equipment before lighting fireworks. A designated zone keeps both people and property safe.
